Finding Your Pup's Perfect Paradise
For many dog lovers, finding the perfect dog park for their pup to play, explore, and socialize is a top priority. But as any seasoned dog guardian knows, not all dog parks are created equal.
Features that elevate a basic dog park to great dog park include water availability, ground cover, waste stations, agility equipment, shade, and/or size. And let's not forget the vibe! Are fellow dog guardians actively engaged with their dogs, or are they glued to their phones, indifferent to their pup's antics? These seemingly small details make a big difference in the experience you and your pup are in for.
Curious about how your favorite park measures up or looking for a new spot that stands out? Check out our guide to Bergen County’s top-rated off-leash dog parks.
Central Bergen County Dog Parks: Big and Spacious
It’s hard for me to pick a favorite in Central Bergen County as all 3 dog-friendly parks are on par with another. While they might not have extras like water fountains or agility equipment, each park has a spacious, size-appropriate area where your pup can enjoy some much-needed off-leash freedom.
Maywoof Dog Park 📍 Maywood
The Maywood Dog Park has separate sections for both large and small dogs. Uniquely the large dog side is 3 if not 4 times larger than the small dog side. There is a hose available for fresh water and plenty of shade from large trees. However, the ground is hard, and I noticed some toys lying around. Note, dogs are not allowed in the recreational area.
Phelps Park 📍 Teaneck
The highlight of Phelps Park in Teaneck is its equally large, separate spaces for small and large dogs to run and meet. The dog runs’ pea gravel surface means no muddy messes, and the surrounding amenities (playgrounds, picnic tables, tennis courts, and baseball fields) make this destination family friendly. Don’t forget to bring some water for your dog, as there’s none on-site, and keep in mind that parking requires a small fee.
Van Saun Dog Park 📍 River Edge
With separate areas for large and small dogs, every pup can feel comfortable and safe while socializing. The ground here is covered in soft, light sand, so if it has rained recently, it’s a good idea to bring a towel to wipe those paws clean. While the larger Van Saun County Park is perfect for a family outing—with attractions like a zoo, splash pad, and carousel—please note, these activities aren’t dog-friendly. However, you and your pup are welcome to explore the park’s 3 miles of walking and biking paths.
Eastern Bergen County Dog Parks: Urban Gems
Urban and densely packed, Eastern Bergen County features smaller off-leash dog parks. While Overpeck County Park is large, sometimes it’s the smaller spots that lend themselves to making new friends. Take Fort Lee Dog Park, for instance – my top pick in the area. It’s perfect for pups who enjoy sniffing out fascinating scents, perching to observe their surroundings, and socializing at their own pace. This cozy park is a haven for dogs who prefer a more relaxed time over running.
Fort Lee Dog Park 📍 Fort Lee
Don’t be put off by its small size, Fort Lee Dog Park stands out for its well-maintained use of space. With separate areas for small and large dogs, the ground is comprised of a gravel surface that eliminates mud after rain. In the play area dogs can enjoy platforms and tunnels. There is a hydration station to fill bowls or water bottles. Located near a community garden, tennis courts, a kids’ splash pad, a playground, and basketball courts, it’s a nice spot offering something fun for everyone.
Bergenfield Dog Park 📍 Bergenfield
Hidden behind the recycling center, the Bergenfield Dog Park provides a simple space for your pup to play. With spacious areas for both small and large dogs, your pup will have plenty of room to explore. The park's ground is pea gravel which provides a softer surface for dogs that love to jump. Rules are posted to ensure a safe community space for all.
Tenafly Dog Park 📍 Tenafly
The Tenafly Dog Park has had a major makeover. The large and small dog runs now feature comfortable pea gravel flooring with proper drainage, making muddy paws a thing of the past. The spacious large dog area (~3x of the small dog section) includes a water station and secure double-locking gates for added safety. Note, small dog area doesn’t have double gates, so be extra careful if you have a dog that likes to bolt through an open door. Convenient parking makes this upgraded dog park one to revisit.
Overpeck Dog Park 📍Leonia
Nestled within Overpeck County Park, this spacious dog park is one of the largest in Bergen County. Though the ground is lined with woodchips and there isn’t much shade, it’s still a good spot for dogs that love to stretch their legs and run. Make sure to pack water for your pup as there’s none provided on-site. To reach the dog park, expect a short walk (3–5 minutes) from the parking lot. Paved walking paths nearby offer another option for quality time with your pup.

Northwest Bergen County Dog Parks: Fun for the Entire Family
Bring Fido? Why not! Northwest Bergen County is home to four off-leash parks. With two expansive county parks and two municipal parks to explore, there’s no shortage of fun and fresh air for you and your furry companion.
My personal favorite is Saddle River County Park. It offers so much for both you and your pup to enjoy whether you’re playing fetch or simply taking a peaceful stroll, this park never disappoints
Glen Rock NJ Dog Park 📍 Glen Rock
At Glen Rock Dog Park, you'll find dedicated play areas for both large and small dogs, with approximately 1.5 times more space allocated to the big pups. Each yard is designed with a combination of gravel surfaces, growing trees for shade, community toys and a hose. While this dog park looks pretty, seating arranged to stimulate conversation might make it harder for dog guardians to stay engaged with their pets.
Saddle River County Park-Wild Duck Pond Area 📍 Ridgewood
You'll adore this location for all its amenities. Within the Upper Saddle River County Park, there’s a 6-mile walking path, playground, pavilions, a river, huge shady trees and an off-leash dog park. This dog park has plenty of shade, waste stations and separate play areas for both small and large dogs. And if you and your pup prefer solitude, fear not – there's plenty of space to wander undisturbed.
West Woof Dog Park 📍 Westwood
West Woof Dog Park is ideal for dog families. The dog park features wood chips to keep paws clean and agility equipment like teeter-totters, weave poles, and tunnels. Although there is no shade, there is a hose with fresh water to help keep your dog cool and hydrated. You are welcome to take your dog for a walk on the adjacent dog-friendly walking track. With a limited parking and dog run capacity of 25 people, visiting the park on the weekends could be a challenge.
Wooddale County Park 📍 Woodcliff Lake
Treat your dog to some shade and playtime at the off-leash dog park located within Wooddale County Park. The dog area offers a hose for water and a nearby restroom; however, this park lacks separate spaces for large and small dogs. If the dog park isn’t a good fit, instead opt to take your dog on a leisurely stroll around the lake.
Insider tip: The quickest way to access the dog park is to use the lot closest to the exit and head straight over the little foot bridge.
Southwest Bergen County Dog Parks: Space for Every Pup
Whether you're looking for a cozy, manageable off-leash space or a sprawling area where your pup can really stretch their legs, you’ll find three dog parks in Southern Bergen County. My favorite is the Wood-Ridge Dog Park. Every detail here speaks to thoughtful design and excellent upkeep. From pristine grounds and fun play equipment to convenient water stations and shady trees, it’s clear this park was built with both dogs and their humans in mind.
Lyndhurst Dog Park 📍Lyndhurst
Located inside the Riverside County Park is Lyndhurst Dog Park. Here are separated by size, and dogs have ample space to explore. The ground is covered in healthy amount of mulch. There are picnic tables and chairs are available for pet parents to relax. However, keep in mind, there’s no shade so bring sunblock for you and water for them.
Samuel Nelkin County Park 📍 Wallington
A welcoming spot for families and their dogs alike. The dog run area has two separate spaces—one for smaller pups and a larger space that's twice the size for big dogs. The mulch-covered ground and tall, some large trees offer some cooling comfort, which when you are covered in fur like a dog will appreciate. There’s no water available, so be sure to pack your own and a bowl too.
Wood-Ridge Dog Park 📍Wood-Ridge
Finding Wood-Ridge Dog Park on your first visit might be a bit tricky since it’s tucked behind the retail shops and next to the athletic complex—but stay the course because it’s worth it. This well-maintained, modern park offers separate areas for small and large dogs. Despite its compact size, you'll enjoy the thoughtful amenities, including agility equipment for your dog to try, shade from trees, mulch ground cover, fresh drinking water, and plenty of parking. One of the best parks in all of Bergen County!
BONUS: Beyond Bergen County – A Worthwhile Excursion
Although technically just outside Bergen County, Goffle Brook Dog Park in Passaic County is worth visiting. Separate areas for big and small dogs, along with high-quality agility equipment, ensure a fun visit. A friendly reminder about dog etiquette is posted for all owners to see. It's evident that this park was created with a true understanding of what makes a wonderful off-leash dog park.
Insider tip: Search Goffle Brook Dog Park, Hawthorne rather than Goffle Brook Park to find this gem.
